Maintenance & Aftercare
How do I care for my new Mane Baby hair?
- Brush Before Washing: Give your extensions a thorough brush before washing. Use a high-quality, sulphate-free shampoo and wash twice.
- Condition Carefully: Apply salon-grade conditioner or masque to towel-dried hair, avoiding the roots. Let it soak for 2–5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. With more hair, spend extra time to ensure all conditioner is rinsed out.
- Lock in Moisture: Use a leave-in conditioner with heat protection on damp, towel-dried hair. Apply section by section, and brush through with a Wet Brush.
- Drying: Air dry if possible, or gently blow dry until 80-90% dry using your fingers. Section the hair and finish drying with a paddle brush, ensuring roots are fully dry. Use low heat to protect the weft bond.
- Heat Protection: Apply a heat-protective oil or serum between washes to protect from styling tools.
- Deep Conditioning: Treat your extensions to a deep conditioning masque on the ends weekly, or as needed, to keep them nourished and soft.
What Products Shouldn't Be Used On My Extensions?
We recommend avoiding products containing citrus extracts, Moroccan or Argan oils, silicones or their derivatives, protein- or keratin-based products, and products containing a high alcohol content.
This includes medicated toning shampoos (such as purple shampoo) and tanning products.
Using these products may cause discolouration of your hair extensions.
Purple shampoo can also cause bonds to break down as it builds up on the top of the weft over time; try and limit it to just washing the top section of your hair instead of the extensions.
Avoid using Olaplex on the roots of the extensions. The active ingredient in Olaplex causes the bond at the top of the weft to disintegrate, meaning the weft will start shedding.
Strictly avoid salt water. As salt is a natural dehydrator, it can cause your hair to become extremely dry, discoloured, and difficult to manage.
How do I care for my Mane Baby extensions to prevent discolouration?
Proper aftercare is essential to keeping your Mane Baby extensions looking their best.
Failing to follow our recommended care instructions can lead to discoloration, which can impact the natural look and longevity of your extensions.
To avoid discoloration, make sure:
- Use only sulphate-free, extension-safe shampoos and conditioners.
- Minimise exposure to hard water, chlorine, and saltwater, as these can alter the colour of your extensions.
- Always rinse thoroughly after swimming and avoid high-heat styling tools on hair.
- Avoid using chemical-based sunscreens. The active ingredient is avobenzone, which may turn blonde shades orange or pink!
By following these steps, you’ll keep your extensions vibrant, soft, and beautiful for months.
For specific aftercare tips, consult your Mane Baby specialist to ensure your extensions retain flawless appearance.
Can I colour my extensions?
Absolutely!
Hair can be coloured or toned darker using 6 v developer to further customise the colour and to work with the client’s natural hair to achieve the most natural result possible.
Our extensions are available in 55g half-head allotments, allowing you to mix and match shades effortlessly for endless colour combinations. This flexibility means you can achieve a unique look by sandwiching and blending colours to suit your style.
Any colour services performed on your hair extensions must be done by your Mane Baby Hair Extensions specialist. We only recommend colouring darker and toning; any bleach is strictly prohibited as it will cause irreversible damage to your hair extensions.
Light blonde-coloured hair extensions will have a shorter life span due to the bleach content. Lighter shades will also require more care and less heat application to increase lifespan.

Will Mane Baby hair extensions damage my client’s natural hair or scalp?
This is the most frequently asked question and the biggest misconception about hair extensions in the hairdressing industry!
Mane Baby extensions are designed for a comfortable, damage-free installation that evenly distributes weight, reducing tension on the scalp.
Providing that you thoroughly commit to the Mane Baby aftercare plan and guidelines that your Mane Baby Certified stylist gives you, your client will not experience any damage.
Mane Baby hair extensions encourage natural hair growth by minimising the contact between the natural hair and heat or bleach.
How long will my Mane Baby hair last?
With proper maintenance and aftercare, our luxurious hair extensions should last you between 9 and 12 months, or even longer.
About the Hair
What does 100% human hair mean?
When "100% human hair" is used to describe hair extensions, the hair used in the extensions is entirely sourced from human donors, without any synthetic fibres mixed in.
The term signifies that the extensions are made from real, natural human hair, offering a more authentic look and feel than synthetic alternatives.
Human hair extensions can be treated like natural hair—they can be washed, styled, coloured, and heat-treated while maintaining their integrity.
The best-quality 100% human hair extensions typically have the cuticle intact and aligned in the same direction, which helps prevent tangling and matting and makes the extensions more durable and long-lasting.
These extensions blend seamlessly with the wearer's natural hair, offering more versatility and a more natural appearance.
Where does the hair come from?
Mane Baby Hair is sustainably and ethically sourced from rural communities, traded for fair compensation, and gathered by expert hair collectors with many years of experience in the industry.
People specifically choose to grow hair to sell as a commercial enterprise. They sell to hair merchants that collect the hair from various donors and grade it according to its quality. At Mane Baby, we work closely with our suppliers to ensure you receive a consistent and high-quality product.
Is the hair ethically sourced?
Mane Baby only uses human hair, which is ethically sourced from donors around the world.
Ethically sourced hair is hair that has been willingly donated by an individual who has given their consent and been paid a fair and equitable wage for their donation. It’s important to us that Mane Baby hair has been obtained ethically and that our donors are fairly compensated and well-treated.
We have a well-established, long-term relationship with our international manufacturing team. Within this team, we also have our trusted hair buyers who select 100% human hair of the highest quality to ensure your satisfaction.
Does the hair come pre-coloured?
Our hair is collected from donors in its original virgin-like state. It is then taken to our factory, where each pony is sorted and then pre-coloured to match our colour ring to allow ease when we are applying it to clients.
The virgin hair is lightened gradually over 7–14 days, which maintains its integrity and ensures that your new extensions are long-lasting and silky. It is then toned and coloured back to match the various colours on the Mane Baby colour ring using the highest-quality Korean dyes.
How often do you need to move up the extensions?
Lifting your wefts regularly safeguards your natural hair from damage so it continues to thrive. The longer you leave it, the less hair supports the extensions' weight.
For best results, we recommend having your wefts lifted every 6 weeks.
For those with finer hair textures or hair that might be thinning due to hormonal changes, we recommend visiting your extension specialist roughly every 4 weeks.
Can I swim with my hair extensions?
We recommend keeping your hair tied up and out of the water when swimming.
If you choose to swim with your extensions, please be aware that this is at your own risk.
If your natural hair becomes dry or damaged, it can eventually repair itself; however, this is not the case with extensions, and extra care is needed.
Below are some preventative measures you can take to minimise damage.
If you decide to swim with your extensions:
- Rinse your hair with clean water from a shower before swimming; this will saturate the strands of hair so they soak up fewer minerals.
- To minimise tangling while swimming, coat your hair with a leave-in conditioner or treatment, braid it, or place it in a secure bun.
- If your hair does become tangled, apply a treatment and use a wet brush to brush out all knots very gently.
We do not recommend swimming in chlorine, as this will damage and discolour your extensions.
If you do not follow your stylist's professional advice, you may need to purchase new extensions, as this will shorten their lifespan.
*Mane Baby Hair is not liable for any adverse effects on your hair or extensions that may result from not following the recommended aftercare instructions.
