Walk down any hair care aisle and you'll see both: boar bristle brushes promising shine, and nylon brushes promising detangling. If you wear extensions, which one should you use?
The short answer: they do different jobs, and a blend of the two is usually best. Here's the detail.
What boar bristle does
Boar bristle is a natural fibre with a structure similar to human hair. It's soft and flexible, and it has two big benefits:
- It smooths. Boar bristle glides along the hair shaft, helping the cuticle lie flat. That's what gives hair a glossy finish.
- It spreads natural oils. As you brush, boar bristle carries the natural oils from your scalp down the lengths of your hair.
The downside: on its own, boar bristle isn't great at getting through tangles. On thick hair or extensions, a pure boar brush can skim over the top layer without reaching knots underneath.
What nylon does
Nylon bristles are synthetic and firmer. Their main job is detangling.
- It gets through knots. Nylon pins separate the hair so tangles come out.
- It reaches deeper into thick hair.
The downside: stiff nylon on its own can feel harsh and doesn't give the same smoothing, shine-boosting finish. Very stiff pins can also catch on extension attachments.
Why a blend works best for extensions
When boar bristle and nylon are combined, each covers the other's weak spot. The nylon works through the tangle first, so the boar bristle isn't fighting knots — it can do what it does best, which is smooth and add shine.
For extension wearers, that means:
- Tangles come out without dragging on your wefts, tapes or bonds
- The hair is smoothed, not roughed up
- Your extensions stay glossy and blend better with your natural hair
The pad matters too
Bristle type is only half of it. A cushioned pad lets the bristles flex as they meet resistance, so the brush gives a little instead of pulling. That's especially important over attachment points and on wet hair.
What about extensions made from human hair?
Good quality extensions are 100% human hair with the cuticle intact, so they respond to brushing just like your own hair does. Boar bristle helps keep that cuticle smooth, which is part of what stops extensions from tangling and matting over time. More on that in how to stop extensions tangling.
