"Weft" covers a lot of ground. Machine wefts, hand-tied wefts, genius wefts and hybrid flat wefts can all look similar in the pack, but they behave very differently on a client's head. If you're deciding what to offer in your salon, here's how they compare.
Machine wefts
The original weft. Hair is sewn onto a band by machine, creating a strong, durable track.
- Pros: durable, widely available, usually the most affordable
- Cons: the thickest track, with a visible "return" at the top that can show and feel bulky, especially on fine hair
- Best for: thicker hair that can easily conceal a track
Hand-tied wefts
Hair is tied onto a fine thread by hand, making a very thin, flexible weft.
- Pros: thin and flexible, moves naturally, comfortable
- Cons: generally shouldn't be cut, so they're often stacked to fit the head; typically more expensive and more delicate
- Best for: clients who want a soft, natural movement and don't need the weft cut to width
Genius wefts
A thinner machine-style weft designed to be lighter than a traditional machine weft while being more flexible to work with.
- Pros: thinner than a standard machine weft, designed for flexibility in placement
- Cons: still a sewn weft, so the finish depends heavily on the specific brand and on placement
- Best for: stylists wanting a thinner machine-made option
Hybrid flat wefts
A hybrid flat weft takes the discreet, fine finish of a hand-tied weft and combines it with the versatility of a flat weft. The weft lies completely flat to the scalp, with no return at the top to hide.
- Pros: sits flat with no ridge, discreet enough for fine hair and up-styles, lightweight and comfortable, and doesn't create the itchiness some clients feel from a bulkier track
- Cons: results depend on quality hair and correct installation, so training matters
- Best for: fine hair, clients who wear their hair up, and anyone who wants extensions that feel like their own hair

What actually matters most
The weft type is only part of the result. Three other things decide whether an install looks natural:
- Hair quality. 100% human hair with the cuticle intact stays soft and tangle-free. Coated hair doesn't last.
- Colour match. A wide shade range, including rooted shades, makes blending easier.
- Installation. Placement, sectioning and the cut-in are where the work is.
